The Diocese of Central Pennsylvania Banners

Early in March of 2003, the Committee responsible for planning the celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Diocese of Central Pennsylvania, asked me to design a set of banners celebrating the event. The original concept was to have a banner for each of the seven convocations, bearing its name and the Gathering 2004 logo. Through a series of conversations, the design grew from these simple flags to an elaborate art quilt mural in seven panels, each of which can stand alone.

The mural transitions through the four seasons in Central Pennsylvania.

Each 30x50" quilted panel is a combination of patchwork, appliqué, and embroidery. Most of the fabrics used are 100% cotton (there are a few novelty fabrics as well). Many are hand-dyed, and Bali batiks are used to great effect for shading and dimension. The sky, which alone consists of over one thousand pieces of fabric, is an example of watercolor quilting technique, which allows colors to flow from one into another.

Animals and plants native to Central Pennsylvania appear throughout the mural. The borders are embellished with branches of Mountain Laurel, the state flower. Hemlocks, the state tree, recur throughout the work.
